Do you find it challenging to imagine what you desire? For so many of us, dreaming bigger than what our bank account buys, how much credit we have, or what we know HOW to do is very challenging. So often, what we know HOW to do or how much money we have becomes the criteria for what is possible. We might say we believe in all possibilities, yet, our inner belief system, most likely doesn’t agree. This is where we unfortunately get stopped. We might say things like, “I can’t afford that. I don’t know how to do that, etc.”

The challenge in declaring what we want in the face of our current resources, circumstances and knowledge is the very reason it is paramount to pay attention to our deeper thinking and emotions. The following metaphor can explain the importance of attending to our mindset when we desire something greater than what we’ve ever done or had before. I’ll use my previous career in the field of real estate, lending, and escrow to make this point.

I used to design custom homes. It was so much fun planning, designing, and completing my homes on paper. This process produced results very quickly!  The exciting day would finally come. We would break ground and begin the foundation work. Oh, how I got impatient with the prep work and digging.  (Frankly, there is nothing sexy about a foundation!) It seemed to take so long to get my homes out of the ground, yet, without the foundation, I would never have had a house.

I have to admit that creating wealth from the inside out can be a process that doesn’t feel sexy and fun at times. We have to do our inner work. We must prep our inner landscape by clearing out old habit-patterns and beliefs. We have to dig deep and surprisingly, we don’t always know what we might find below the surface. Yet, without this important work, our house will come tumbling down in the first storm. In other words, achieving the desires we want by changing our behaviors alone will not withstand the test of time or the changing conditions we can’t always predict. Unwanted circumstances can catapult us into chaos and fear, and eventually, our house will come tumbling down.

Without the thoughtful work of creating my floor plans prior to the beginning of construction, who knows what I might have ended up with. Chaos would have ensued for sure. The contractors would not have known what to do or where to go. How many times have you gotten excited about an idea and charged off into action without really thinking through exactly what you really wanted? In contrast, have you ever taken extreme care to know exactly what you wanted, yet, you felt fearful and reluctant to take action and begin? Each one of these choices can be a symptom of a deeper mindset that is not prepared to have what you want.

There are two (2) vitally important questions to ask yourself when you’re creating the plans for what you want.  (And it isn’t HOW!)

  1. Ask yourself ‘What’ questions, i.e., what specifically do you want? What does it look and feel like? Clarifying questions are excellent and often include what you don’t want.
  2. The second question you must answer is ‘Why.’ Why do I want this? Why is what I want so important to me? Remember, it must become a priority or you won’t follow through when things change or when you are challenged to grow and change yourself!

I don’t know about you,  but, a very old habit that I had to break in learning to be a conscious, deliberate creator for my business and personal life was to stop asking the ‘how’ question. When it came to dreaming bigger than I had ever dreamed before, I had no idea ‘how’ I was going to pull off so many things that I wanted. The ‘how’ always came after my decision and commitment to go for what I desired.

The temptation to answer ‘how’ in the design stage of what we want, stifles our creativity and pulls us back into what we know or can currently do. Consequently, we recreate only what we have done before, why, because we know HOW!

Do you get trapped within this question, “How am I going to do this if I don’t see a way right now? If you do, you are not alone. Not knowing ‘how’ in the design stage of anything you desire, be it business or personal, will limit your possibilities and will not be what is truly in your heart.

Wealth Practice # 12
  • Dare to dream on paper. Write down a desire that you have no idea how to do and that you would like to realize within the next 90 days. Pick something really important to you.
  • Write down the details of what you want. (It’s okay to include what you don’t want. Just turn it around into what you do want.) Be as specific as you possibly can!
  • Write down all the reasons why it is important that you achieve this desire. Be honest with yourself.

Remember, we are what we practice!
