What if there was only one barrier getting in the way of you achieving success and prosperity? Wouldn’t that simplify things a bit? I think there is one main barrier, and it’s the same thing for all of us. It’s my dear friend, Resistance! It is resistance that keeps us stuck in the same–place, it’s resistance that messes up our relationships, and it’s resistance that turns our pain into suffering, just to mention a few problems that we share as human beings.
How do you recognize if and when you are caught up in resistance? It is hard to recognize because resistance, by its nature, keeps us imprisoned and blind to our habitual perspectives and behaviors because it wants to keep us where we are. That’s its job. This causes us to continue to experience the same results that we really do want to change. It is essential to address and skillfully master resistance if you are committed to going beyond your current reality and circumstances and attain the results and experiences that you want. It’s good to remember, what you resist, persists! The way that you handle your own or another’s resistance reveals whether or not you are in the survival, scarcity mode or whether you are in your natural abundant, thriving state-of-being.
You know you are in resistance when you are engaged in the following ways:
1.) You will feel tension in your body. Your muscles tighten up, and you contract or get rigid;
2.) Your language becomes argumentative, dismissive, combative, and judgmental, i.e. yeah but, you should or you shouldn’t, that’s wrong and it doesn’t count, blaming and shaming;
3.) Emotionally, you will feel anxious, stressed out, fearful, angry, or frustrated.
Resistance shows up in behavior as well. This is where we can really get tripped up with our own resistance to change because it all seems so justified. See if you recognize yourself in any of these following behaviors:
1.) Pushing yourself to do something when your body is losing energy or is exhausted;
2.) Not making decisions or not taking action because you feel confused. Confusion and procrastination are two common ways that we resist change.
3.) Over-eating, over-spending, excessive attempts to control, etc. are also signs of resistance to being uncomfortable and being out of your familiar set points, i.e. with income, weight, relationships, and your health.
If you have found yourself in any of these behaviors and feelings, or you recognize the resistance in your body, congratulations! You now have a relationship with your own resistance. Remember, I have often said that we live our life in relationship. That is true relative to our own resistance as well. Can you imagine being a better relationship partner with resistance? First of all, you are not your resistance. It is there to keep you safe and intact with what is tried and true. This awareness can give you the power of choice. Do you want to continue letting resistance run you blindly or not? It can be a choice.
The magical antidote to resistance is acceptance! Yes, that wonderful little word that can be so challenging, particularly in the face of resistance; yet, it is the easiest way to melt through this energetic barrier to freedom. Without accepting and naming where you are in the moment, be it fearful, anxious, stuck, angry, tense, tired, etc., you will not be able to move through your natural resistance to change in an easy and sustainable way.
Wealth Practice # 20
1.) Notice in your conversations with others and in your own self-talk, if you are being resistant to them or to yourself. Write down what triggers your resistance. Heighten your awareness to gain back your power of choice.
2.) Practice aligning with yourself when you feel bad. Name the emotion or the place of tension in your body and just feel it fully. Breathe life into it. Life will dispel the energy of it! Notice what happens when you relax and let yourself be, just as you are.
Remember, we are what we practice!
Keep wealth as a priority and remember why you want to be wealthy.
