Recently I had the pleasure of attending a financial freedom retreat in which I was challenged to give away a $1.00 bill to a stranger. It was amazing to me how the idea of giving $1.00 to a stranger could produce so much anxiety in me.
This exercise was so powerful because it revealed an old belief I had concerning my inner sense of value, not being good enough. As I considered doing this exercise, I noticed that I was imagining that the person I gave the $1.00 bill to would think I was cheap! Imagine the logic in that. By me even considering the idea of giving a stranger a $1.00 bill for no reason at all, caused my old negative belief to rear up and accuse me of being cheap. Yikes!
Well, it doesn’t end here. As I took a closer look in my business and personal life, because I believe that the way we do one thing is the way we do everything, I realized that my old fear of worrying that I might not give enough value to my clients, my family, and my friends, was the result of being held under the spell of this belief. Consequently, my anxiety led to feelings of guilt, because I couldn’t believe I was ever enough.
Consequently, I over-delivered and under-charged as a way to over-compensate for this limiting belief which drove my behavior relentlessly. Truthfully, I knew something didn’t feel right whenever I did give away too much. I knew I wasn’t honoring my savvy business sense, however, with enough rationalizations and justifications; I was able to keep this going much longer than I care to admit.
Fortunately, after doing my growth work, together with the support of my mentor coach and mastermind partners, I broke the spell. This habit of over-delivering and under-charging is a pattern that I didn’t create and put into place overnight. I now am vigilant and remind myself of what I deeply know about who I really am – a powerful member of humankind that is imbued with infinite intelligence and creative power, all being the nature of our Source energy, some call Spirit, some call God, some call Higher Power.
Regardless of the name you use, the point is to identify with immense value and potency. Identify with the Truth that your nature is that of your Source, not your made up beliefs from childhood. No, no, no. That is not who you are.
If you currently recognize yourself in my story and know that you over-deliver your services and under-charge for the value you bring to others, I invite you to stop the craziness Now! Stop the justifications and rationalizations that are merely a reflection of your beliefs and conditioning from the past.
I invite you to do the $1.00 bill give-away (only to a stranger, and not to someone for whom you can rationalize or justify your action) and discover what your limiting belief is regarding your perceived core value. Your perceived core value directly affects how easily and appropriately you can ask for money and it shows up in your ability to receive plenty of money for the high value that your services and products offer.

Congratulations Andrea!
I’m thrilled you accepted the $1.00 give-away challenge. It is truly amazing how this brings our stuff up! I love that you had a breakthrough!
Love you!~Judy
Judy – I wanted to perform this experiment before commenting on your post! As I thought about giving $1 to a stranger, I felt the “who am I to bother someone I don’t know with my need” refrain… Wow is that ever an old one with me! But I made up my mind when and where I would carry out the assignment and I did it yesterday. The first person wouldn’t take the money! But the next person did. What I discovered after I gave the $1 away was a wonderful sense of freedom, because I had moved through an old habit of thought. Thank you, love you!
Hi Janis,
Isn’t it interesting to see the parallel between how we are with money and how we are in relationships! Money is such an accurate mirror of our inner beliefs about who we think we are, particularly in relationship to others. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Thank you Carol! I love ‘just in time’ reminders. Yeah for your big proposal opportunity!
Abundant blessings,
~Judy
What timing you have Judy…I have a big proposal to deliver on Monday and will use your story to suspend my own give something away for less than its worth mentality. Abundant blessings in this department right back to you. 🙂
I have done this in the past, and my experience was that I actually gave more than the $1.00. I can see that I overdelivered, expected “somethng” in return that I did not get, and was resentful later. Hmmmmm…..
